Radiotherapy for Hyperthyroidism in Cats

Radio-Iodine Therapy

Radio Iodine Therapy is a medical process used to destroy (not just control) abnormal thyroid tissue in hyperthyroid cats. Feline Hyperthyroidism is the most common hormonal imbalance diagnosed among middle aged to older cats. An overproduction of thyroid hormone results in an over-active metabolic state. The classic signs of hyperthyroidism include increased activity, weight loss, increased appetite or thirst, increased vocalizing, vomiting, diarrhea, or panting.

Veterinary Radiotherapy was established in 1999, to provide a safe and effective alternative to daily medication or surgery. The actual treatment involves only one injection of radioactive iodine (I-131) under your pet’s skin. Each patient is admitted into the specially designed treatment area for a 7-10 day period, during which they are closely monitored daily.

Success rates at Veterinary Radiotherapy exceed 95%! A few patients require thyroid supplementation after treatment due to lack of functional thyroid tissue, and less than 5% of patients require a second treatment.

If your cat has been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism, and you are interested in learning more of this procedure, please speak with your veterinarian about a referral to Dr. Marc Glavin, our Radiotherapy specialist and Radiation Safety Officer.
